Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
