On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
